Geographical location of Sabzeh Meydan
Sabzeh Meydan (literally green square) is located in the center of Qazvin, Qazvin Province, Iran. Its west side leads to Imam Khomeini Street, in which the Grand Traditional Bazaar of Qazvin is located, and its east side leads to Taleghani Street that is followed by Valiasr Intersection which is one of the most crowded spots in Qazvin.
History and culture of Sabzeh Meydan
It was officially named Meydan Azadi after Iran’s revolution, however, locals prefer to call it Sabzeh Meydan instead. Until the early 1920s, Sabze Meydan was part of the Chehel Sotun Palace but after city expansion and road construction, the north side of Chehel Sotun's garden was destroyed and altered into today’s Sabzeh Meidan.
Sabzeh Meydan has a beautiful green landscape with an artificial pond right in the center. Since 2018, the front street has turned to a sidewalk and on special occasions, enormous decorative elements are placed accordingly. In Nowrouz (Persians new year feast) the street is designed with a big Haft Sin whereas in Yalda (the longest night of the year) there are plenty of different kinds of nut, huge watermelons, etc. to catch your sight. In fall, a taste of hot boiled labou (beetroot) along with some delicious torshak (made of sour fruit) being sold in wooden wagons will make your day. Also there are always some old, retired, kind men sitting around, talking, and playing chess. Horse-drawn carriages, which are always available, are a good choice to go around the area.
Tips and ideas
As I said Sabzeh Meydan is the center of the city and Ferdowsi, Naderi, Imam Khomeini, Taleghani, Peyghambarie, and Helal Ahmar Street are connected to it. Chehel Sotun Palace is on its south side which has a spectacular view for photographers and inside you can enjoy your moments in Qazvin’s Calligraphy Museum. Don’t forget that Qazvin is a small city so with just a five-minute walk you can get to Sa’d al Saltaneh Caravanserai, Iran’s biggest indoor bazaar, and make your trip memorable.
