Geographical location of Heidarieh Mosque

It is located in Bolaghi District, presumably the oldest district in the city from 1200 years ago, previously known as Panbe Risseh, in Sepah Street, Qazvin Province, Iran.

History and culture of Heidarieh Mosque

The mosque is from the Seljuk period, late 12th or early 13th century, but the school was constructed later Under the Qajar dynasty in the 19th century. It is a widely held view that back then, Qazvin owned two Jameh mosques; the bigger one was known as Atigh Jameh Mosque and was dedicated to Shia (the second largest branch of Islam), and the second Jameh Mosque, aka Heidarieh Mosque, was dedicated to Sunni Islam which operated until Mongols’ attack that resulted in reduction of Sunnis in the country.

In the late Safavid period many destructive earthquakes occurred and demolished the mosque’s dome and chambers. Later on, in the Qajar dynasty it was renovated architecturally so that the old chambers could be allocated as school classes. In the Pahlavi period, it was once again destroyed to be built into a new and modern school. Nevertheless, they didn’t destroy the whole ancient monument and in 2008, the school was shut down to prevent further damages to this eccentric site.

Architecture of Heidarieh Mosque

The mosque is constructed of brick and is famous for its splendid brickwork facing and carved stucco decorations. Additionally, its decoration is remarkable for its early glazed tiles. Arched niches in interior corners are topped with carved stucco inscriptions and muqarnas brick decorations. The rhombus brick patterns on the squinches are decorated with inscribed bas-relief circles. There is also a fine floriated Kufic plaster inscription frieze below the dome arches. Some of the inscriptions are from of the Surah Hashr in the Quran.

The mihrab on the south wall of the prayer hall is composed of finely carved stucco on a painted blue background. Although the bottom half of the mihrab has been damaged, it remains one of the finest examples of Iranian stucco mihrabs. Stylized high relief pomegranates and pine cones are found on the frame around the mihrab and on the arch of the dome above the mihrab.
