Geographical location of Sardar Koochak Cistern

This reservoir is located next to Tabriz Street, a short distance north of Sultan Seyyed Mohammad (AS) imamzadeh , in front of Sardar mosque-school in Qazvin, Qazvin province.

History and culture of Sardar Koochak Cistern

This reservoir was built in 1299 AH by Sardar brothers, Mohammad Hassan Khan and Mohammad Hossein Khan, who were the rulers of Ali Shah and Mohammad Shah Qajar. In order to perpetuate their name in Qazvin history, these two brothers started building a complex including 2 water reservoirs, a school-mosque and a bathhouse, all of which are named after Sardar. The older brother builds Sardar bozorg reservoir on the current Rah-e-Ahan Street, and the younger brother builds the Sardar Koochak reservoir in the Ghamlaq or Moghlawak neighborhood.

Sardar koochak reservoir is known as this name because of its attribution to the younger brother. However, in terms of capacity and expansion of water, it is larger not only than Sardar bozorg reservoir, but also of all reservoirs in Qazvin.

Architecture of Sardar koochak cistern

The capacity of this reservoir is 3800 cubic meters and like other reservoirs, it has 36 entrance steps, 4 water taps, a large water tank, 4 domes, each of which has holes for winding to keep the water clean. And it is a valve for cleaning water by Mirab.

When you go down the stairs, you can feel the difference in air temperature. The air inside the reservoir is much colder than the air outside. After going down the stairs, there is a road that has been opened for public visits later and from this passage you can go into the reservoir. The size of the reservoir is a good indication of the hard work of the ancient peoples who built the reservoir in the past and then worked hard to get water into it.

The entire large reservoir and four domes are located on a large column. Its walls are also made of mortar to make it more resistant to moisture.
