History and culture of Stephen Gregory Church
The Armenians of Isfahan, as well as Armenian merchants and immigrants from Russia, built Stephanos church, the oldest church in Hamedan, in 1676 AD at the time of Shah Suleiman of Persia. The background story is that during World War I, thousands of Armenians from Western Armenia took refuge in western Iranian cities such as Kermanshah and Hamedan. After settling down, they decided to make the place more like home; so the first essential place that they needed was a church, a place to keep their religion.
The church belongs to the Orthodox religion. The building was destroyed after 255 years, due to natural disasters, and was restored in 1932. Several important Armenian religious figures are buried in this church such as His Holiness Driznik Vartap Karksian (not sure of spelling). He was the Armenian Vice-Caliph of Isfahan Julfa and the Armenian religious leader of Hamedan and Arak.
Architecture of Stephen Gregory Church
The Gregorian Church of Hamedan has three entrances. The main entrance is under the Bell Tower and the other two are on the north and south angel of the building. The south door leads to the backyard and the north door leads to the main courtyard of the church. The building has a rectangular plan consisting of a main hall and a library. The building’s façade is of brick but the interior part is very simple and doesn’t have any architectural decoration. However, the paintings of Jesus Christ, the Blessed Virgin Mary, and Vardan Mamikonian, Armenian military leader, has decorated the interior walls. In addition, many numerous narrow windows around the building provide the light of St. Gregory Stephen Church.
