Geographical location of Hamedan Jameh Mosque

This sacred mosque is located on the western side of the Hamedan Grand Bazaar, at the beginning of Ekbatan Street, Imam Khomeini Square, Hamedan City, Hamedan Province, Iran.

History and culture of Hamedan Jameh Mosque

Jameh Mosque of Hamedan is one of the oldest mosques in the city. Based on the architectural specifications and some inscriptions found in the mosque, it seems that the building belongs to the Qajar period. The construction’s date, 1837 AD, is written on the front Iwan which coincides with the reign of Fath Ali Shah Qajar. But some older documents tell another story. In those sources, the mosque is listed as one of the Islamic Golden Age projects.

One of the oldest sources that mention this Grand Mosque is related to one of the historians of the third century AH named "Moqaddasi" who writes: "That city (Hamedan) had three rows of bazaars, one of which was the Grand Mosque with an old construction."

At first, this mosque consisted of only one Shabestan, Shabestan (chamber) is an underground space that can be usually found in Iranian architecture, to which various other spaces have been added throughout history in accordance with the growth of the bazaar and urban communities. The oldest current part of this mosque is its southern section and most of the constructional changes and developments of this building are related to the Safavid, Qajar, and Pahlavi eras. The main entrance of this mosque was initially on the west side and towards the bazaar, which has been moved to the north side due to the new constructions.

The terms “Jameh Mosque” or “Masjed-e Jameh” are used in Iran for a grand communal mosque where mandatory Friday prayers are performed; the phrase is used in other Muslim countries but only in Iran does it designate this purpose.

Architecture of Hamedan Jameh Mosque

The current building of the mosque is rectangular in shape and consists of a courtyard in the middle and three iwans on the north, south, and east sides along with several Shabestan (chambers), 6 minarets, and a dome. It used to have four iwans of which three have remained. The mosque has three entrances, including a newly built entrance on Ekbatan Street on the southeast side, an old entrance with an arched corridor on the east side of the courtyard, and another old entrance with a porch adorned with Muqarnas on the west side of the courtyard.

The courtyard of the mosque is of 40 by 24 meters’ dimension and has a large pool in the middle. The level of the courtyard is 2 meters lower than the surrounding alleys, which are paved with stone and there are shallow arches on the south side of the courtyard. The main Iwan on the south side of the courtyard is 14 meters wide and 7 meters deep, which has an arched roof. On top of this Iwan, on the east and north sides, two short and thick minarets have been built and are decorated with subtle art of Iranian architecture. The iwan and the domed space behind it, 14 by 14 meters, forms the first core of the mosque with a mihrab (niche) on the south side. The dome of this building has double shells, which is a remarkable feature in terms of architecture.

As I mentioned it has several Shabestan in every direction but the northern one is larger than other and ever since the eight AH century, it’s been called “Hamdollah Moustofi”. This Shabestan has 32 columns in the north-south direction and every column is of 5-meter height with 4-meter distance from each other.
