History and culture of Imam Khomeini Square in Hamedan
Central Square in Hamedan is one of the oldest and biggest squares in Iran. Since this square intersects with six main Streets of the city, you can access the whole city from this point. This square was added to the National Heritage List on July 12, 2000, with registration number 2712, under the title of radial cities with concentric circles which is unique in terms of urban planning in the whole country. Despite being a century old, the square has still kept its connection to the other streets. In 2017 during the reorganization, reconstruction, and restoration program approved by the Islamic Council of the city, the square has been turned into a sidewalk, along with Bu Ali and Ekbatan streets. The traditional bazaars in this area are among the covered bazaars from the Islamic and Qajar periods.
Architecture of Imam Khomeini Square in Hamedan
The initial plan of this square was prepared by Karl Frisch (not sure about the spelling), a German architect in 1928 and was built from 1930 to 1933 with 12 domes around it. The square is of 80 meters dimension and all six streets are 30 meters wide at an angle of 60 degrees to each other. Simple geometric patterned brickwork, window sills with human and animal motifs, and wooden windows are some of the stunning artworks around the square. The architecture and design of this square are very similar to the architecture of European squares in the Renaissance.
