History and culture of Tomb of Habakkuk
This tomb belongs to the Achaemenid Era while Cyrus the Great's empire. Habakkuk was one of the Israelites prophets. Israelites, Elijah (a prophet and a miracle worker who lived in the northern kingdom of Israel), and Daniel (A noble Jewish youth of Jerusalem) were contemporaries. Habakkuk has a lot of popularity among people, as a result of being the guardian of Solomon's Temple which was a significant and sacred place for Jewish in Jerusalem.
Habakkuk was born in Jerusalem. He was imprisoned for a while during the attack of Nebuchadnezzar II, the most powerful monarch of the Neo-Babylonian Empire, to Jerusalem. Many Jews were killed and some were taken, prisoner. The captives were taken to Babylon and imprisoned for about six decades. With the conquest of Babylon by Cyrus the Great, he ordered to release all the captives.
Architecture of Tomb of Habakkuk
This building is a cylindrical building with 8 sides belonging to the Seljuq dynasty. The main tomb is located in the basement, which was discovered in 1993 after digging a pit by antiquities smugglers. It is said that in this excavation and observation of the body of the Prophet, his body was healthy and his skin was palpable.
This brick tower is about 12 meters in height and has a conical dome. There are matchless brick and tile works in Star of David's pattern on the façade of the building. During the excavations, there is an ancient tomb with a square nearby of the Tomb of Habakkuk, which seems to be the former building of the Tomb of Habakkuk.
