Geographical location of Traditional Garden of Qazvin

Traditional Garden of Qazvin is located in the southern half of the Qazvin Province, Iran. These Gardens are more than 2500 hectares and had surrounded the city in the past.

Architecture of Traditional Garden of Qazvin

The Traditional Garden of Qazvin dates back to 1000 years ago.

Nasir Khusraw described Qazvin city in his book “Safarnameh” as a city with lots of Gardens with no fence so everyone could go there.

The reason for calling this Gardens as a Traditional Garden is related to the traditional system of irrigation which is being used in the Garden. In the past, this Garden had been watered by 5 rivers. Each of these rivers irrigated a part of the Garden. But due to the city development and water harvesting system by upstream villages, now the traditional garden of Qazvin is facing with dehydration.

In the past, the traditional garden of Qazvin was so important for the city’s economy. So far, Dehkhoda who was a prominent Iranian linguist chose the word “dakhou” as a pen name for himself which is only locally used and means ‘The Guardian of Water’ and also was used for those responsible for irrigating the Gardens.

A solar map is the first document in which the structure of Qazvin city can be found. The map shows the extension of the Gardens and green spaces in Qazvin. Also, Zakaria al-Qazwini wrote about the natural and artificial structure of Qazvin city in his book ‘Asar Al Bilad’.

Before industrial and modern agricultural development, since 1330, these Gardens had been the main and biggest economic activity center of the city. Many people used to subsist by gardening and animal husbandry. Merchants and tradesmen used to compete with each other for improving the Gardens.

The Traditional Garden of Qazvin is a beneficial area for the country which has been threatened and destroyed by urban mismanagement. This Garden has to be protected not only as an important Garden but also as a symbol of civilization. Traditional Garden of Qazvin beside historical value, is used as a defense shield against dust and pollutants and also works as a green belt and is important ecologically and culturally for Qazvin’s citizens.

Tips and ideas

The Traditional Garden of Qazvin is located outside the city in contrast with other tourist attractions which are within the city so you should go there by car. At the edge of the Emam Ali Boulevard which is the westernmost Boulevard in Qazvin, you can see the whole city on your right side and on your way wherever you see almond trees with a dark trunk, that’s the Garden. Then, you can park your car and walk into the spectacular garden.

In the autumn, you’ll find an amazing sunset there. Walking and cycling around would be pleasant. For recommendation, the best season to visit the Traditional Garden of Qazvin is spring, exactly when you can see almond blossoms on the trees. At this time the Garden is full of blossom and it makes a beautiful place for photography. Locals go there for sizdah be-dar (also known as Nature’s day which is an Iranian festival held annually on the thirteenth day of Farvardin) a lot to enjoy. If you want to go sightseeing there, please remember not to light the fire or drop your garbage in the Garden.
