Chehel Sotun Palace is located in Azadi Square (Sabz-e Meydan) in Qazvin city, Qazvin province. Kolah Faragi is located in heart of the town where lots of other historical attractions are there, so you can see the palace many times as you are walking around in historical region. The mansion is part of the Safavid Palace Complex and is in the northern era.

Shah Tahmasb Safavi decided to move the capital from Tabriz to Qazvin in 951 AH duo to the threat of ottoman turks. This unique monument was built in 1510 A.D under the commend of Shah Tahmasb Safavi.

When Qazvin took its turn as iran’s capital, Shah Tahmasb orderd the country’s proffesional architects to execut a squre garden in which to built magnificent mansions, halls, porticos and beautiful ponds. this palace was renovated in the Qajar era.

The Safavid Pavilion and Ali Qapu Portal, with its magnificiant texture is the only remaining mansion belonging to Shah Tahmasb’s Royal Complex. Another value of the pavilion is that it was on the Silk Road so people could see the glorious palace as they were walking by. The pavilion is in the center of the historical context of the city so it’s close to the other monuments.

Architecture of Chehel Sotun Palace

Shah Tahmasb Safavi constructed the complex on a checkered texture with very elegant and beautiful wooden windows. due to the special design of windows and the use of stained-glasses, it looks especially glitter at nights.

Kolah Farangi is a two stories building that stands amid gardens. On the ground floor, there’s a porch that includes colonnades which are formation of brick columns and semicircular arches. The ceiling is decorated by exquisite designs of Muqarnas. There are lots of paintings on the upper story’s wall that as they say in history, it is drawn with gold. The existence of three layers of wall paintings indicates the passing of various historical periods. Some of the paintings that are on the flat wooden ceilings are the symbol of qazvin doctrine miniture. All of these artworks have worldwide reputation. Chehel Sotun’s Mansion was registered in the indenture of iranian monuments in 1998 A.D .

The palace sorrounded amoung a very calm, wonderful garden so you can spend a precious time there. Chehel Sotun is near the Sa’d Al-Saltaneh Caravansarai, the largest covered inn in the world and the largest indoor-city caravansarai in Iran. In order to get acquainted with Iranian’s culture, this place has become a museum for that case. It’s recommended to visit the mansion near the sundown because of the delicate lighting.
