Geographical location of Lion Stone Status

The stone lion statue is located in the south of Hamedan city, at the end of 12-meters (Sang-e shir) street and in the middle of a square with the same name next to the old road from Hamedan to Malayer.

History and Culture of Lion Stone Status

In the year 319 AH, when the Dilmians captured Hamedan, they threw the statue of lions from above. Mardavij Deilami wanted to move one of the statues to Ray, but when he did not succeed, he completely destroyed one of the statues, broke the claws of the other lion, and restored the statue, which at first sat as a lion. This damaged statue was fallen on the ground for many years until in 1328 by Engineer Seyhoun; The designer and architect of the tomb of Abu Ali Sina was installed on a platform in the middle of one of the squares of Hamadan.

In the Islamic era, this lion was considered as a protector of the city and a talisman for repelling diseases. According to ancient beliefs, kissing the lion's nose also brings happiness to young girls. For this reason, the protrusion of its nose has been smoothed out by the kisses of women seeking a husband.

In 1330, people thought that a buried stone lion was hidden in the abdomen so they broke a part of the front of the chest and separated it, but they were arrested by the police and the stone lion was repaired.

This stone statue is 2.5 meters long, 150 cm wide and 120 cm high and is installed on a pedestal in the middle of one of the southeastern squares of Hamedan.

The hill on which the stone lion statue now stands is an ancient hill, and a coffin from the Parthian period has been discovered and is now housed in the Hegmataneh Hill Museum.
